Why LCME Accreditation Matters
Dear College of Medicine Community,
You may have started to see posters distributed in the Medical Science Building and the CARE-Crawley Atrium announcing LCME Accreditation. An accreditation site visit is a regular part of the work of every medical school and has important benefits to the school and its medical students. As medical students, you are investing your time, talent, and trust in the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. One of the most important ways the quality of your medical education is assured is through accreditation by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), the nationally recognized accrediting authority for MD-granting medical schools in the United States and Canada.
LCME accreditation serves as an external validation that our medical education program meets rigorous national standards for curriculum, student services, faculty engagement, educational resources, learning environment, and institutional effectiveness. Accreditation is essential because it assures students, residency programs, licensing boards, and the public that graduates are receiving a high-quality medical education that prepares them for the practice of medicine. UC COM is known for excellent outcomes such as board pass rates above the national average, strong match rates into competitive residencies, and excellent clinical preparation for residency. That is part of our brand, and accreditation helps drive that level of performance.
The accreditation process helps ensure students have access to appropriate educational resources, effective clinical experiences, student support services, academic advising, wellness programs, and a positive learning environment. Accreditation also creates opportunities for students to provide feedback that drives meaningful improvements throughout the curriculum and the student experience.
The institution benefits as well. Accreditation promotes continuous quality improvement, encourages strategic planning, identifies strengths and opportunities for growth, and demonstrates accountability to students, patients, and society.
Monitoring accreditation compliance is a continuous process at UC COM and includes data collection, self-study, analysis of institutional performance, student input through an independent student analysis, and preparation of extensive documentation. This work will culminate in a comprehensive site visit by a team of LCME surveyors in October 2027.. Ultimately, the process is not simply about compliance. It is about ensuring excellence in medical education and fulfilling our commitment to preparing outstanding physicians to serve the health needs of our communities. Our UC COM Accreditation Team will be sharing regularly here in the months ahead of self-study preparation.
Thank you for your continued commitment to excellence in medical education — I look forward to keeping you updated as this work unfolds.

How LCME Accreditation Helps Ensure that UC COM Graduates Are Well-Prepared for Residency Training
The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine is committed to providing an outstanding medical education and ensuring that our graduates are well-prepared for residency. In Journey #1, I noted that excellent clinical preparation for residency is part of our brand. We see that reflected in survey data from our graduates and hear it from our alumni year after year. One of the processes that helps drive this outcome is accreditation by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
On the AAMC Graduation Questionnaire over the past three years [Classes ’24, ’25 and ‘26], UC COM graduates agreed or strongly agreed that they:
LCME accreditation is not a one-time event but an ongoing cycle of evaluation, reflection, and improvement. The process spans several years, and key milestones include collecting institutional data, conducting a comprehensive self-study, completing an Independent Student Analysis (ISA), implementing improvements, submitting required reports, and hosting a comprehensive site visit by a team of LCME surveyors, which for us takes place in October 2027. Following the visit, the LCME reviews all findings and determines the school's accreditation status. UC COM received full eight-year accreditation following our last site visit in October 2019.Accreditation is a collaborative effort that involves our entire College of Medicine community: faculty, students, staff, educational leaders, department chairs, administrators, and clinical partners. Students, in particular, provide especially valuable insight through surveys, focus groups, committees, and direct feedback and that input drives meaningful improvement. Later this academic year, students will have a major opportunity to shape this process through the ISA. Faculty and staff play a vital role in supporting educational excellence and identifying opportunities for improvement.
Most importantly, accreditation is about more than meeting standards. It is about ensuring that every student receives the highest-quality medical education possible and graduates prepared to serve patients, communities, and the medical profession with excellence, professionalism, and compassion. UC COM graduates are well prepared with a strong foundation for success in clinical practice. That is part of our brand, and accreditation helps sustain that level of preparation.
