Pathway Innovation & Inclusive Excellence

Mission statement:

Cultural competence and inclusive excellence are essential to achieve our core mission in the University of Cincinnati Department of Surgery, which includes research, residency education, and exceptional patient care.

Goals:

Professional Development

1. Implement medical student scholarships for student researchers and acting internships for exceptional applicants.
2. Support of the Society of Black Academic Surgeons (SBAS), Society of Asian Academic Surgeons (SAAS), Latino Surgical Society (LSS), and Association of Women Surgeons (AWS) from the surgical department.

Training, Education & Recruitment

1. Understanding disparities in patient care.
2. Implicit bias training to promote the selection of the most qualified applicants.

Staff Development & Support

1. Speaker series with physicians, educators, and/or esteemed lecturers fostering topics applicable to disparities in surgery and/or inclusive excellence in patient care.
2. Underrepresented minority resident mentorship/pipeline program.
