Screening of Prostate Cancer

Prostate Cancer may not cause symptoms at first. Your primary care physician or urologist will perform a digital rectal exam (DRE) and test your blood sample for prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a blood protein secreted by prostate cancer. The results of these test will help guide your physician about treatment options. In case of a palpable prostate nodule or elevated PSA, an ultrasound guided biopsy of the peripheral portion of the prostate is performed. Sometimes these screening tools fail to provide enough information and in these cases, the UC department of Radiology can provide magnetic resonance imaging with both new and established techniques to help find cancer and guide future biopsies.
