Hematopathology
Length: 3 x 4 week-long blocks
Location: University of Cincinnati Medical Center
Participating Faculty: Anna Balog, M.D.; Youssef Khafateh, M.D.; Ahmad Mansour, M.D. and Nives Zimmermann, M.D.
On the hematopathology service, residents learn to interpret the results of a variety of diagnostic procedures, including conventional morphology, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, cytogenetics and molecular genetics. Residents are actively involved in the work-up and interpretation of hematologic tissues (primarily lymph nodes and bone marrow) under the guidance and supervision of the attending hematopathologist. Residents participate in management/triage decisions regarding lymph node and/or extranodal biopsies for possible use in ancillary studies, including flow cytometry, cytogenetics, immunohistochemistry, molecular/genotypic analysis, and/or tissue culture as indicated.
The Department of Pathology is fortunate to have a close-knit relationship with the very active hematology/oncology service at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, which provides the opportunity for thorough collaboration with clinicians for optimal patient management. Additionally, residents are encouraged to attend conferences to acquire a multidisciplinary perspective on cases.
