The Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Cincinnati/Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center offers a comprehensive tertiary unit that provides the full spectrum of services for children with disorders of the head and neck. Our flagship centers of excellence include a world-renowned airway reconstruction program for children with congenital and acquired problems of the airway that require tracheotomy or airway reconstruction to allow children to breath safely and naturally.
Additional centers of excellence include programs for pediatric hearing loss that apply state of the art implantable devices and medical therapies to provide children with the ability to develop communication skills, and programs targeted at accurately diagnosing and treating persistent sleep apnea, voice disorders, vascular anomalies and other tumors of the head and neck region. Generating optimal outcomes for our pediatric patients are also enabled and accelerated by highly integrated clinical programs that coordinate care with related disciplines such as pulmonary medicine, gastroeneterology, pediatric and cardiothoracic surgery (all of which are expertly staffed at CCHMC).
In addition to these tertiary and quaternary services, the Pediatric Otolaryngology division of UC’s Department of Otolaryngology also provides the highest level of primary care ENT services to the greater Cincinnati region; handling the vast majority of children who need routine tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy and PE tube type procedures. On an academic and research front, the Pediatric division contributes substantially to the Otolaryngology Residency program at the University of Cincinnati while also training 3 Pediatric Otolaryngology fellows each year. The robust clinical environment offers trainees a singular opportunity to gain exposure to the broad scope of conditions and challenges seen in Pediatric Otolaryngology.
Vigorous research programs in voice disorders, sensorineural hearing loss, and obstructive sleep apnea, antiviral therapy for virally-mediated hearing loss and tissue engineering for airway reconstruction represent just a handful of the many ongoing research projects within the pediatric division.
Taken together, the Pediatric Otolaryngology program at UC/CCHMC presents a very complete and vital program that provides unique clinical, academic and research components to the Otolaryngology department’s portfolio of activities.
