What are AHEC Scholars?

The AHEC Scholars Program is for current health professions students interested in positioning themselves to join a well-prepared healthcare workforce. The program’s core topics are:

  • Interprofessional Education
  • Behavioral Health Integration
  • Connecting Communities and Supporting Health Professionals
  • Virtual Learning and Telehealth 
  • Practice Transformation
  • Current & Emerging Health Issues

What are the program requirements?

This two-year program requires 40 hours each year of didactic experiences and 40 hours of team- and community-based experiences each year. This is in addition to your regular course load. (Some current courses may be eligible for program credit.)

  • Each cohort is limited to 15 students.
  • AHEC Scholars cohorts begin each fall on the University of Cincinnati’s campus.

What are the benefits?

Participation in AHEC Scholars provides students with a variety of benefits including:

  • Twice yearly stipends, dependent on available funding
  • Participation in professional conferences and continuing education opportunities
  • Student research opportunities
  • Clinical and community shadowing experiences
  • Rural and Appalachian experiences
  • Recognition from the National AHEC organization

Who can apply?

The program is open to students in the third and final years of a degree (or an associate's degree) in disciplines supporting primary healthcare services delivery in clinical and non-clinical roles. Applicable majors include but are not limited to medicine, community and public health, nursing, and allied health programs.
